What is AIDS Fraud?

AIDS fraud is the promotion of an AIDS-related health product or treatment known to be false, unproved, or potentially harmful.

Many people with AIDS and HIV infection look for alternatives and additions to medical treatment. Complementary therapies should be carefully evaluated.

If you are looking for treatments for AIDS or HIV infection, protect yourself.

How to Identify AIDS Fraud

  • Claims that a product cures AIDS may be false.
  • Some products use personal success stories to promote sales. Personal success stories are not proof that a product or treatment works.
  • Be suspicious of claims that a treatment can "prevent" or "cure" AIDS.

You Should Question Any Treatment That...

  • is promoted as "miraculous," "foolproof," "secret," or "suppressed."
  • claims to have been discovered by a "foreign doctor" and/or is advertised as "tested in another country."
  • is sold to "cure or prevent" other illnesses associated with HIV/AIDS.
  • is an experimental drug treatment that you must pay for.  NOTE: it is very rare for patients to be charged for experimental treatments or drugs.

  • It is illegal to make profits from experimental drugs.

$$ & "Sense"

  • Fraudulent products are not scientifically tested and can be expensive.
  • They waste your money and health insurance does not pay for them.
  • If you use products or services that are not tested, or may not work, you can delay getting proper medical care and your illness may get worse.

Important Questions to Ask

  • Can you give me printed material on this product to take with me while I think about it?
  • Is this product or treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration?
  • What use is it approved for?
  • If this product is not approved, why not?
  • What are the risks and side effects of taking this product?

Look Before You Leap

No matter what answers you receive, do not feel pressured to make an immediate decision. Take time to think and get more information from an HIV/AIDS agency, AIDS hotline and your AIDS-knowledgable physician.

Legitimate health care providers will not object to your search for additional information.
